Cooper's Craft | The Tasting Room at Westport Whiskey & Wine

Tuesday evening I went with Alicia Orgel to the Coopers' Craft Bourbon tasting and cocktail demo at Westport Whiskey & Wine / The Tasting Room at Westport Whiskey & Wine where she and Cat taught the class how to make a Hop & Holler:

  • 1 1/2 partsCoopers’ Craft
  • 1/4part Triple Sec
  • Top w/ Ginger Beer
  • 3 dashesOrange Bitters

Add all ingredients into a mixing glass. Stir and strain into an old fashioned glass over ice.

Everyone had a great time tasting the bourbon and learning how to use bar spoons-- as well as the reason why we shake or stir drinks!

Heaven Hill Brands' Bartender of the Year Contest 2017

Sunday March 5th I traveled to Nashville, TN with bartender Alicia Orgel from Martini Italian Bistro to cheer her on with fellow bartender Colleen McCarthy as she competed in the Heaven Hill Brands Bartender of the Year regional semifinals contest. Alicia was one of eight chosen from the region out of hundreds!

The contest had two rounds-- the first was a presentation of an original cocktail or spin on a classic using Heaven Hill's featured brands: Domain de Canton, Elijah Craig, Rittenhouse Rye, and PAMA. Alicia made it to Round 2, which was "What'll you have?"-- the judges drew cards describing a cocktail they'd like to drink, and the bartenders had to come up with something on the fly using all four of the featured brands among three drinks. Alicia made it to the top 4!

Her cocktail was a spin on a whiskey sour called Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, and it featured a homemade lingonberry puree (lingonberries are also called foxberries, hence the cocktail's name), Rittenhouse Rye, Fee Brother's cranberry bitters, Domaine de Canton, lemon, and whites of one egg.

Woodford Reserve Cocktail Contest

This week, I shot photos for a couple of bartenders from Martini Italian Bistro--a local restaurant and bar in Louisville-- for their upcoming Woodford Reserve cocktail contest entries. They had to submit their ideal Manhattan cocktail made with Woodford Reserve bourbon as well as an original inspired cocktail made with Woodford Reserve Double Oaked.

Bartender Alicia Orgel's 'perfect' Manhattan is equal parts Vya sweet vermouth and Dolin dry vermouth, Woodford Reserve bourbon, and aged aromatic bitters. Stirred, garnished with a cherry and a lemon twist.

Her original cocktail is the Persephone's Fury, a Woodford Doubled Oaked based drink with Domaine de Canton ginger liqueur, lingonberry puree, pomegranate shrub, and Bittermen's Hellfire habanero shrub. Garnished with a burnt expressed orange peel.

Bartender Jason Stark's take on the 'perfect' Manhattan:

His original, Woodford Went Down to Georgia, made with Woodford Double Oaked, vanilla bean soaked peach bruleed and then muddled with black walnut bitters, Vya dry vermouth, and Madagascar vanilla bean simple syrup.
